In November 2009, Sustainable Spaces became Recurve.
Recurve inspected and analyzed the home prior to renovation. Engineers tested the functionality of the home’s energy systems and modeled the home’s existing energy requirements.
After the testing, Recurve designed building envelope improvements to reduce the energy load of the house and modeled the prescribed improvements. The maximum energy load was reduced 54% with the proposed improvements. Recurve improved the building envelope by insulating the sub floor, exterior walls and attic with cellulose insulation.
Recurve designed the new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system. The system uses an air source heat pump and air-to-water heat exchanger to produce hot water. The hot water storage tank is for domestic use, radiant floor heating and forced air heating.
Recurve calculated the necessary size of the solar panel array. They determined that a 100% photovoltaic (PV) system was the most cost effective way to reach the renovation’s net zero energy goals.

Recurve improves the energy performance of existing, older houses, so they lessen their impact on the environment and global warming. The company is now the leading specialist in the growing field of home performance retrofitting. Founded in 2004 as Sustainable Spaces, Recurve has tested over 1000 homes, and has retrofitted more homes than any other home performance contractor on the West Coast.
The company does this by applying building science when evaluating and retrofitting each home performance project. Sustainable Spaces looks at how each component—energy, windows, appliances, heating and ventilation—impacts energy efficiency, air quality and comfort. Through multiple steps, Recurve works with homeowners to audit, measure, fix, re-measure and continuously monitor the home performance of our clients.
Recurve experts include BPI Certified Technicians, LEED Accredited Professionals, HERS Raters, GreenPoint Raters, and Certified Green Building Professionals. The company helps clients understand the most cost-effective way to maximize the health, comfort, and efficiency of their homes.
